May 29 – June 20, 2009. The Public and Artists’ Reception will be during the
Fort Collins Gallery Walk on June 5, 2009.

Marvel

The marvellous portrait in the „Installed Realities“ portfolio does not rely on showing true reality. Visual dichotomies are consciously provocative as Sculptures are installed into a surreal surrounding. Things and Models are posed and are forced into a storyline. This seeming reality is a construct. This relationship is translated as „installation“ by the artist, and this creative process purposely destabilizes and manipulates reality. Surroundings and props impose context and create a surreal atmosphere. The pictures depict something in between dream and reality and while the constructs and concepts are concrete, they leave enough space to allow for viewer interpretations. The installations show a fictitious reality through the artists eyes and are based on conceptual ideas predating the final print. The pictures appear surreal, with careful choice of surroundings and props that create an aesthetic specific to the photographers intent. In that sense they may appear more like paintings where colour, perspective and composition are arranged together to form a vision of the artists interpretation of a scene. The picture`s content is imaginary and the whole set up is controlled by the artist who finally brings himself into the picture again with a camera as a brush. The large format provides the viewer a pathway to become an active part of the picture as well as to create a sense of distance. The quality of the large format states the fact that it is no snapshot but indeed a well composed picture where no coincidence may occur. The reality is affected-it is installed.

JURIED EXHIBITION

December 5 2008 - January 10 2009

Gallery Saintonge is pleased to announce its first Juried Exhibition, juried by Hipólito Rafael Chacón, Professor of Art History and Criticism in the Department of Art at The University of Montana. After reviewing 546 submissions from across the nation and Canada, H. Rafael Chacón, selected 37 pieces, including 28 artists in the exhibit. The work was juried anonymously, and according to Dr. Chacón, final selections were chosen based on “intrinsic merits, in terms of the strengths of the ideas they present and their execution.” Chacón looked for work that was “the best of a genre, but especially works that critique, comment on, and/or expand upon tradition.”

FOCUS ON FASHION

"Mode ist zu einer Muse der Kunst geworden. Gleichzeitig bedient sich die Mode der Kunst als Inspirationsquelle. Beide stehen sozusagen in einem Tauschverhältnis. Beim Kunstprojekt „Focus on Fashion“ verschmelzen diese zwei: Vier junge Vorarlberger Fotografen inszenieren ein Fotoshooting nach einer eigens entworfenen Modekollektion. Dabei sind ihnen keine Grenzen gesetzt, im Mittelpunkt steht die kreative Arbeit, der Fokus aus verschiedenen Perspektiven."

About "installed realities":

When I saw the show of photographer David Lachapelle in Vienna I decided to become a photographer. His works inspired me a lot and working with people would become essential to my pictures.

I present people in a crazy, funny, intimate glimpse of action is the aim of a good picture of mine. They don`t show reality in the sense of being documentary but tell surreal stories. The installations raise questions about the scenes and the actors attitudes. I call my photographs „surreal installations“ because I set the actors poses and build up extravagant sets. Protagonists become a storytelling „tool“ in an „installed reality“ to underline conceptual ideas.

I like pictures that are concerned with high technical detail so the „large format“ is essential to my pics. I want my viewers to position themselves in front of my work, to regard it whether it is from a distance or from very close.

Details in my works become important as they are „explaining“ part of my stories.

The pictures are large format, are mounted on aluminium and are framed.
